Verónica Ortega
El Bierzo
Bierzo’s Rising Star.
Verónica Ortega works centenary vineyards on both the valley floor and mountains slopes of Bierzo, making both white and red wines from field blended, centenary vineyards. Verónica trained at Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Domaine du Comte Armand (under Benjamin Leroux) in Burgundy, worked harvests with Daphne Glorian and Alvaro Palacios in Priorat, and was winemaker at Domaine Laurent Combier in Crozes-Hermitage. In 2010, under the advice and tutelage of Raul Perez, she began making wine in the ancient vineyards of Bierzo.
Since then, Verónica’s reputation has rocketed to the very heights of Spain’s wine renaissance, making some of the most elegant, silken, and complex Mencia-based wines in all of Bierzo. Perhaps most superlative, however, are her white wines. Made in tiny quantities from the sparse plantings of Godello, Dona Branca, and Palomino Fino that can be found tucked away in old vineyards in Bierzo, these are breathtakingly complex and mineral wines that stand with the very best being made in Europe.
